About the Organizers

Liz Lira

Liz Lira is the 24-Times Ultimate World and US Salsa National Champion. She founded and directs the Liz Lira Dance Academy. She also choreographs for So You Think You Can Dance, Dancing With The Stars and Make it or Break it Latin, Salsa and Tango. http://www.lizlira.com

Earl Rush

Earl Rush is the founder and president of StuckOnSalsa in Washington, DC, which offers salsa dance instruction and event promotion services. Earl’s StuckOnSalsa website provides information about salsa happenings in the Washington DC area, as well as other cities. http://www.stuckonsalsa.com

Dynamix Performing Team

Dynamix is a performance dance team based in Washington, DC. Founded in 2007 by Steve Zaloga and Rachel Weiss, Dynamix is made up of dance and fitness instructors, performers, and choreographers from many disciplines. Dynamix performs throughout the United States and also provides performances and instruction in the Washington, DC area. http://www.dynamixsalsa.com

Dates, Times, and Venues

The competition comprises one round of performances. Each dancer should plan to perform the routine a second time, if necessary.

Competition Rules

General Rules

-        Dancers may perform on whatever beat they choose (e.g., on-1, on-2).

-        All music is welcome. However, dancers must perform to the genre of the music chosen and may not mix genres. For example, a performance may not include both salsa and hip-hop.

-        With respect to performance length, couple routines must fall within a minimum of 1:30 (minutes:seconds) and a maximum of 1:50. Team routines must fall within 2:00 and 2:30.

Categories and Category-Specific Rules

Dancers may perform in one of four categories. Here, we present the four categories and any rules specific to each category:

Category 1: Salsa – Amateur

-        Amateur salsa dancers include individuals who do not regularly receive compensation for competition, instruction, or performances.

-        Rules: Amateur salsa performances may not include any over the head tricks.*

Category 2: Salsa – Pro

-        Professional salsa dancers include individuals that regularly receive compensation for competition, instruction, and performances or who have competed in the professional category of a previous salsa competition.

 -        Rules: Professional salsa performances may include up to three tricks. Dancers may perform over the head and/or off the floor tricks.

Category 3: Salsa – Team

-        Salsa teams include groups of more than two dancers.

-        Rules: Other than the general rules (presented above), there are no restrictions on team salsa performances.

Category 4: Bachata – Amateur

-        Amateur salsa dancers include individuals who do not regularly receive compensation for competition, instruction, or performances.

-        Rules: Amateur bachata performances may not include any over the head tricks*.

*An over the head trick is defined as a dancer lifted past the height of his or her partner’s shoulder*

Judges

A professional panel of judges will adjudicate the competition. The judges panel will include Liz Lira, the 24-Times Ultimate World and US Salsa National Champion, and two other internationally recognized dancers. More information on the three judges will come soon!

Prizes

Dancers that place first in their categories will receive the following prizes:

-        Advancement to Semi-Finals at the LA Salsa Open

-        LA Salsa Open Weekend Pass

-        LA Salsa Open Competition Registration Fee

-        1 room for 1 night (2 rooms for the 1st place team)

**Professional categories will have, for the first time ever, the opportunity to be crowned the King and Queen of Salsa! **

Competitors

-        The registration fee is $50 for couples and $100 for teams.

Spectators

-        This event is a great value! The cost to attend is the normal cover for each of the venues.
